Assistant Cycling Instructor Job Details

Safer Cycling Calgary (SCC) is Calgary's exclusive provider of comprehensive bicycling courses, from never-ever to experienced. Assistants focus on First Time to Intermediate levels, with a path to instructor certification.

Location of work:

Most work begins at the Haysboro Community Association. You must transport your bike and necessary items to the course location.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Under the Owner's guidance, you will:

  • Teach bike riding to all ages.
  • Build relationships with participants and parents.
  • Share curriculum insights and feedback
  • Demonstrate proper helmet use and cycling safety. 
  • Develop skills in communication, leadership, and time management.

This is a part-time job with ample opportunities for additional work. Hours range from 6 to 40+ per week, but the schedule is fixed.

Qualifications:

  • Intermediate level cycling skills at a minimum.
  • Must bring your own well-maintained bike and approved helmet* (dropped handlebars not ideal for some courses; electric bikes must function without assist and are not recommended). *note religious exemptions allowed
  • Be prepared to ride and/or stand outdoors for up to 6 hours, regardless of weather.
  • English proficiency is essential; additional languages are a plus.
  • Complete a Calgary Police background check for working with children at your expense.
  • Advanced course completion (or equivalent, ie CAN-BIKE Level 4) is mandatory; a 50% discount  is available if needed. 

No teaching experience is required, though obviously an asset. Uniform, which is provided, consists of a helmet cover and SCC t-shirt. All essential tools provided.

Wage and other benefits:

Assistant instructors will receive $17 per hour. While health benefits aren't included, this role offers growth potential and a chance to pursue instructor certification. You will get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, your work literally changes people's lives, training and experience will increase your cycling skills and knowledge and it's a lot of fun, too! Yes, you will get paid to ride your bike.

Certified Instructor Job Details

Safer Cycling Calgary (SCC) is Calgary's exclusive provider of comprehensive bicycling courses, from never-ever to experienced. You will work independently and with provided assistants when necessary to teach all courses that you are qualified to, on your own schedule and at location(s) that work best for you.

Location of work:

Currently, most courses are run out of the Haysboro Community Association; expanding at this location is possible for some courses. However, as a Certified Instructor, you can work independently, anywhere in Calgary. Multiple Certified Instructors are needed to offer courses in schools: locations may vary. We will assist you to locate appropriate locations for the courses you'd like to run independently. High demand in NW Calgary for First Time courses especially. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Depending on the level of courses you teach, you will:

  • Plan locations and schedule courses.
  • Guide and assist participants in their online learning.
  • Manage, lead and direct Assistant Instructors.

professional instructor Qualifications:

As a Certified Instructor, you can teach qualified courses on your schedule. Safer Cycling Calgary will handle marketing, registration, paperwork, and provide uniforms and support, including hiring Assistants. You'll arrange course locations, plan routes, and cover space rental costs, as well as supply your own toolkit and equipment.

Wage and other benefits:

Earn $20/hour or a share of registration fees, depending on the course. SCC covers 50% of your CIAC membership and insurance. Enjoy flexible scheduling, choose your audience, soak up the sun, meet fascinating people, and make a difference - all while getting paid to ride your bike and have fun!
