Assistant Cycling Instructor Job Details
Company Description:
Safer Cycling Calgary (SCC) is the only business in Calgary offering a full range of bicycling courses. These courses offer instruction for people who have never learned to ride a bike how to ride through to people who want to ride their bike on the road downtown. The focus for Assistants will be First Time (never ridden before) through Intermediate (for riding on residential roads). There will be the opportunity to pursue instructor certification for employment in future years. This is a high-growth position: I would like to take the Intermediate Kids course into schools in the future.
Location of work:
At this time, almost all work is done at or starting from the Haysboro Community Association. You will be responsible for transportation of your bike and all required items to the course location.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Owner, you will:
- Assist with the delivery of courses.
- Teach children and/or adults how to ride a bike.
- Create working relationships with participants and parents of participants.
- Communicate the principles of curriculum and specific feedback to all participants.
- Network with people of varied ages and backgrounds.
- Model appropriate helmet use and safe cycling skills.
- Gain experience with communicating constructive criticism, cycling skills, leading groups, time management, working with children and adults.
Interested Assistants will have the opportunity to pursue instructor certification and/or future employment. If you are interested in learning more about the Instructor Certification process, please click here.
Qualifications:
- Must be able to ride a bicycle with reasonable proficiency.
- Must provide your own bicycle, in good working condition, and an approved bicycle helmet*: bikes with dropped handlebars not acceptable for teaching First Time or Novice. Electric-assist bikes are ok but must be able to operate without assist (not recommended for First Time or Novice). *Note: religious exemptions will be accepted.
- Must be willing and able to stand and/or ride your bike, outdoors, for up to 6 hours at a time. Some courses run regardless of weather; you must have your own equipment to remain outside no matter the weather.
- Must be proficient in speaking and reading English (additional languages are an asset).
- Must complete Calgary Police Service background check for working with Vulnerable Sector individuals (children), at your own expense.
- Completion of the Advanced course (or equivalent ie CAN-BIKE Level 4) is a required prequalification. (If you have not taken this course, you will get 50% off the course fees to do so.)
- First Aid Certification is an asset.
No teaching experience is required, though obviously an asset. Uniform, which is provided, consists of a helmet cover and SCC t-shirt. All essential tools provided.
Wage and other benefits:
Assistant instructors will receive $17 per hour. While we don't offer medical benefits, this is a unique work opportunity with the potential for continued employment or growth (pursuit of instructor certification). You will get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, your work literally changes people's lives, training and experience will increase your cycling skills and knowledge and it's a lot of fun, too!
