Summer Day Camp!

Kids Daycamp

More than 80% of children ride bikes, but very few know how to operate their bike safely among autos. We ensure that your child is taken care of, being physically active, and learning how to be safe, allowing you to be more comfortable with your child's independence.

Objective:

Young cyclists learn to ride for transportation and/or recreation on residential roads. This camp covers all theory and practical components of the Intermediate Kids course. Participants will ride up to 25km per day.

Course outline:

Monday: bike fit, bike check, tools, flat tire repair, safety equipment, bike security, nutrition for cycling, handling skills.
Tuesday: laws, rules of the road, traffic dynamics, route planning, group riding, first road ride.
Wednesday: second road ride, hills, train tracks, bridges, ride to/from playground and splash park.
Thursday: ride to provincial park, play/explore, possible single-track trail ride, return ride.
Friday: ride to nature park, road evaluation, ice cream break, written quiz, return ride.

Location:

Due to challenges securing indoor space for our classroom component, the exact location for drop off and pick up for Monday & Tuesday has not yet been finalized.

Wednesday through Friday we begin & end at the Haysboro Community Association: 1204 89 Ave SW.

Course structure:

  • Maximum 6 participants per Instructor.
  • Minimum age: 9 years (no exceptions).
  • All participants must be able to ride a bike without training wheels: see pre-course skills evaluation.
  • Participants must supply their own properly fitting bike in good working condition and current, certified bike helmet. (A bike with gears is highly recommended but not required.) All bikes will be registered with Project 529, including the addition of a theft-deterring Shield.
  • Participants must provide their own lunch, snacks and water bottle each day.
  • Participants must provide appropriate swim wear (if needed) and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • All camps run 9am-4pm each day; no before or after care is available.

This is a multi-day course; all sessions must be attended in full. We cannot accommodate participants for the remainder of the camp if any part of a day is missed. Course runs rain or shine; be prepared for the weather! Please note that courses have a minimum necessary to run: if a course does not meet the minimum, participants will be offered a spot in a different week or given a full refund.

Application:

All participants will be screened via an application process to ensure participants' age, skill level and equipment is suitable for the course. This process is in place to ensure your child's bike is the correct size for them to safely master all required skills and that they have an appropriate existing skill level to begin with. You will also be asked to confirm your understanding and acceptance of our policies, in order to protect us from chargebacks and poor reviews due to a misunderstanding of our expectations.

Applications must be completed in full, including submission of photos, by the application deadline. Please note that all photos are securely submitted through Jotform (see more about file security here) and will not be shared with anyone, for any reason, other than Safer Cycling Calgary. All applications will be reviewed by Safer Cycling Calgary and you will be contacted within 3 business days whenever possible: you will be given an opportunity to address any concerns with your application, such as inappropriate bike fit, in order to meet requirements. Approved applications will receive a password to access registration. Full payment is required to complete registration.
